Putting paid to poverty was the aim of tens of thousands who marched through the streets of Madrid on Sunday.

They were taking part in the first of a series of global events starting this week in the run-up to next month’s G8 Summit in Scotland.

The demonstrations are aimed at piling pressure on world leaders to do more for developing nations.

“There are little boys and girls who can’t go to school and we would like to help them with money”, said one schoolgirl.

On 2 July, pop acts will take part in concerts across the world in Live 8, an initiative aimed at raising awareness of poverty and influencing the G8 gathering.
