A day after a tense summit with the Israelis Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie was given a dramatic reminder of the challenges he faces at home.
His visit to a refugee camp in the West Bank city of Nablus was disrupted by militants who fired shots in the air and set of a small explosion.
Qurie’s meeting with local leaders was plunged into chaos but no one was hurt.
It is unclear what lay behind the incident but the Palestinian Authority has committed itself to a crackdown against militants.
As he left an agitated Qurie said: “our project to maintain security will start from Nablus.”
The Palestinian leadership’s efforts to rein in the gunmen was one of the controversial issues under discussion in yesterday’s summit.
The Israelis said they wanted to see more action taken against militant groups.
Some progress was made on the withdrawal of Israeli settlers from Gaza but the Palestinians said they were disappointed with the talks.
