Germany’s construction workers have agreed to work more hours for just one percent better pay.

The deal covering West Germany was signed as the sector languishes in the doldrums, with profits and investment shrinking this year and thousands of jobs lost. The package means the working week will extend from 39 hours to 40, with employees given 30 euros extra per month until March next year, when they willget a one percent pay rise. The IG Bau union did win some of the concessions it wanted – specifically a guarantee of employment for workers even when bad weather means they cannot goon site.
