Pinochet visits hospital in stroke scare

Former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet was rushed to hospital after suffering a serious stroke at his country estate near the Pacific coast. The 89-year-old has been in poor health for several years and has suffered mild strokes in the past. His wife went to Santiago’s military hospital to be with her husband. Pinochet has been accused of hundreds of human rights abuses during his 1973-1990 military rule.

He is currently facing two trials; one for being a conspirator in the anti-left wing Condor plot with fellow South American dictators in the 1980’s. Another investigation is underway into his alleged wealth spirited overseas, mainly to bank accounts in the USA. Doctors say his condition is not critical, and after a stay of four hours in intensive care, he was allowed to leave and return home.
