The visit by President Bush to Georgia was also a chance for displaced people from Chechnya to draw attention to their plight Waving Chechen and American flags, they gathered in Tbilisi and demonstrated against Russia’s actions in their homeland.

“We are hoping that George Bush will exert maximum pressure on Russia over its current genocide of the Chechen people,” said one protestor. “We hope that all the international community, represented by George Bush, will be able to work to find a political solution to the Chechen issue.”

Chechnya has been wracked by conflict and bloodshed for more than decade. Russian forces pulled out in 1996 after a 20-month war with separatists, but then returned in 1999.
