In the newly elected pope’s Bavarian hometown of Marktl, youths from the Catholic Emanuel community chanted outside his birthplace. “We await you in Cologne, Benedict 16th”, they sang, referring to the World Youth Day next August. They were not the only ones out on the streets honouring the new pope.

After a five-gun salute, a Bavarian band played traditional songs as people from all across the region joined locals in a rally through the town during which many beer glasses were raised in celebration.
