The palace in Monaco is has broken its 12-day news blackout on the state of health of Prince Rainer III. It has said that he has been moved to intensive care. He was initially hospitalised 15 days ago.This afternoon his health reportedly worsened. The 81-year old ruler came down with a chest infection after catching a chill while walking in the palace gardens. According to the only previous official communication, the infection was brought under control in the first three days. Prince Rainier has had a series of bronchial infections in recent years, plus aortal and pulmonary surgery. On Saturday his health was “a lot better” according to another report, but not well enough to avoid passing on the not-to-miss Rose Ball. Rainer III’s rule is one of the dynasty’s longest; he succeeded his father Louis III in 1949. The principality claims over 700 years of existence, most of them with the Grimaldi family at its head.
