A grand but unassuming building in downtown New York marks the headquarters of an organisation that bestows the ultimate accolade to the worlds most successful businessmen and women. It’s the home of Forbes magazine who’ve just released their annual list of the richest of the rich. This years rundown shows that there are more billionaires than ever before.
As usual Microsoft founder Bill Gates tops the list with a fortune of almost 36 billion euros. But running a close second is American investor Warren Buffet at 34 billion euros. Only one European makes it onto the list – IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad with a fortune of 17.6 bilion euros.
“What this list shows is that things are on the move again,” says the magazine’s CEO and editor-in-chief Steve Forbes, “this year we have 691billionaires, that’s 104 more than last year. Last years list was 587. Another name that really went down the list, may not be on it next year is Mr. Khodorkovsky, Mikhail Khodorkovsky of Russia. He’s in jail right now. Success does not always mean you have your freedom”
This is Bill Gates’s 11th year at the top of the list of the worlds richest. He’s now as well known for his philanthropy. Gates has famously pledged to give away most of his fortune before he dies.
Ingvar Kamprad’s flat pack furniture has made him his fortune. IKEA’s brand of self assembly products are ubiquitous worldwide despite the fact that IKEA has become just as famous for its sometimes confusing assembly instructions. IKEA now does pre-fabricated houses, but you might need a second pair of hands to help put it up!
