An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale has hit the southeast of Iran killing at least five people. According to state television the quake was centred the town of Zavand in Kerman province and is reported to have destroyed a number of villages. Major settlements appeared to have escaped heavy damage suggesting the overall death toll would not be as high as in some similar strength tremors in the earthquake prone country.
