The post-mortem after the President's speech

European politicians gathered at the US embassy in Brussels gave their verdicts on Bush’s words. First up: European Commissioner for External Relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner. “I think it was an excellent speech, very strong speech and the speech that really wanted to reach out to the European Union.” she said. “And I think it has really praised many of things that Europe has done.” One issue where there has been some division has been over Iraq. NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said: “Of course, there were differences in opinion on Iraq but let’s agree on one thing, and I heard that in the president’s speech as well, every single nation in this world has an interest to see a stable, secure and democratic Iraq.”

German Foreign Minister, Joschka Fischer said that Bush’s call for a renewal of the trans-Atlantic relationship was an important statement. “If we look at the 21st Century and take our security interests equally seriously,” he said “then a strong transatlantic relationship and a Europe that grows together, are decisively important.”
