Another senior member of the Bush administration is also in Europe in a bid to further cooperation with America’s transatlantic allies. US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is expected to call on NATO members to commit more forces to Iraq and Afghanistan at a meeting in the French city of Nice. It is thought the alliance may announce an expansion of peacekeeping in western Afghanistan after recent offers of troops from Spain, Italy and Lithuania. Spain, which withdrew its soldiers from Iraq after the current Socialist government came to power last year, has offered to train Iraqi security forces at a centre outside Madrid.
