Georgia’s Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania has died. Initial indications suggest gas poisoning was the cause of death. Zhvania had been staying at the house of a friend. When he failed to answer repeated calls to his telephone his bodyguard broke into the house to find both Zhvania and his friend dead.

Zhvania, who was 41, was appointed prime minister in January 2003 by President Mikhail Saakashvili, who was swept to power by a wave of protests over a fraudulent election that forced veteran leader Eduard Shevardnadze to resign.
