Catholics around the world are praying for Pope John Paul II who has been rushed to hospital following a sudden deterioration in his health. That the Pope was ill was apparent last Sunday during an address in the Vatican. His aides say he suffered breathing problems following a bout of the flu. That culminated yesterday evening with an attack of laryngospasm – a blockage of air to the lungs.
Vatican officials have said there is no cause for alarm. But outside the Gemelli hospital in Rome the growing media ranks are evidence of mounting concerns for the ailing Pope. The 84 year old suffers from Parkinson’s Disease which can complicate his present condition. Since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s ten years ago he has had occasional respiratory problems. Officials said his breathing difficulties were so severe last night that he had to be taken to hospital.
