Heavy snow has caused chaos in many parts of Western Europe. In Germany trucks and cars came to a halt on the A8 motorway near Stuttgart, with traffic tailing back 16 kilometres. Forecasters are warning that the wintry front will also bring a sharp drop in temperatures. Even in the French Alps, the snow is causing problems. Several slopes have been closed because of the higher-than-normal risk of avalanches.
In Austria a World Cup ski race was postponed because of difficult conditions. Northern and central Italy are also blanketed in snow. In Austria, the severe winter weather has left at least three people dead. Snow is also expected in parts of Spain and Britain.
