Britain has been lashed by severe wind and rain causing widespread flooding particularly in the north.

The bad weather is bringing chaos to many parts of the country, Carlisle in Cumbria has been completely cut off with no safe roads in or out. Some 70,000 people have been left without power. The worst hit areas have been Cumbria, Northumberland, North Wales and Scotland where a passenger ferry has run aground. Northern Ireland and border counties of the Republic of Ireland were also affected. Many residents were airlifted from the roofs of their houses as the waters rose. Emergency services have appealed to boat owners to help them reach areas that have been isolated by the rising waters. The bad weather is expected to let up a little, with the torrential rains predicted to turn into blustery showers.
