Veteran European Commissioner Viviane Reding is in the midst of a row in her native Luxembourg over hiring a housekeeper from the Philippines. This was in spite of having been officially advised to engage one of the 30-million non-skilled Europeans who are out of work.

Satirical weekly De Neie Feierkrop broke the story. It said an opposition MP had pressed Luxembourg’s minister for employment to find out why a work permit had been given even though a special committee had rejected the application. Reding has the European media portfolio in the Barroso Commission, which got off to a bumpy start last November.
