Bulgaria has been banned from exporting all poultry products until the end of January.

The European Commission introduced the suspension after discovering an outbreak of a bird virus called Newscastle’s disease in the country. The illness – which Brussels stressed rarely affects humans – can, nonetheless, decimate entire colonies of birds. The virus was detected in a region close to Bulgaria’s borders with Greece and Turkey. The Commission’s decision will be reviewed next month.
