It seems Ukraine’s Prime Minister and presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovich is already back in campaigning mode. He has visited miners in one of his strongholds in the east of the country, in the city of Donetsk. He is determined he will stay in the race, despite apparent signs that even outgoing President Kuchma has resigned himself to a Yushchenko victory.

“I will only say one thing,” the Prime Minister told the miners. “This lawlessness reigning in western Ukraine and in Kiev will be taken forward into the election. This may be what they understand to be honest elections, but we call it lawlessness. We will do everything possible so that our observers prevent it from happening.” Yanukovich remains the country’s Prime Minister, despite earlier demands by the opposition that he be sacked. His official functions are on hold, however, ahead of the new elections on December the 26th.
