French centre-right politician Francois Bayrou has founded a new party, the European Democrats, with Italy’s Francesco Rutelli of the centre-left.
They place it somewhere between the socialists and the conservatives in the European landscape. The 25 members in parliament sit with the liberal group. The pro-Europe Bayrou heads the French UDF party; Rutelli leads the Italian Margherita party but the new formation includes Lithuanians, Czechs, Basques, Cypriots and a Belgian. The honorary president is former Commission president Romano Prodi.
