No half-measure for Turkey

The European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has rejected part of a report which suggested that a partnership short of full membership in the EU bloc be envisaged in case future adhesion negotiations ran into trouble.

However, the approved text highlights that the opening of negotiations does not make Turkish membership a foregone conclusion. Parliament will vote on the report at a full session on December 14, just two days before the EU leaders meet to decide whether and when to open entry negotiations with Ankara. The committee called on the leaders to open those talks “without undue delay”.
