Green light expected for Bulgaria

Bulgaria is considered the most promising of the future enlargement candidates, having finalised last month acquisition of the full body of EU standards and rules — the so-called ‘acquis’. President Gueorgui Parvanov has been in Brussels for talks with the new EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, who was optimistic of the prospects:

“I think that we should be able to keep the timetable; It is a common decision, as you know, of the Member States… we can conclude formally the negotiations in the next European Council, in December, and then Bulgaria can become a full member of the EU on 1st January 2007.” At the December summit, Bulgaria hopes to be officially given a date to sign the adhesion treaty. A progress report comes out this Thursday.
