If the 200,000 strong rallies by the opposition have dominated the television screens – the winning side has also succeeded in getting its supporters out on to the streets. Dressed in blue and white the colours of their party, they have been less vocal and in far fewer numbers. But they say they will stay on the streets until their leader is sworn in.

For the time being both sides are being kept apart because of fears they could attack each other. There have been unconfirmed reports that Russia has sent some special forces to Kiev either to protect the president-elect or its own embassy.
