French truck drivers have decided not to bring gridlock to the capital today. They had been planning to block all major roads in and around Paris. But the government made it clear if they tried, police would confiscate their driving licences and tow away their trucks. Hundreds of truckers had been heading to Paris from across the country to protest against rising diesel prices.
They say their competitors in the South and Eastern Europe have less expenses than them. They want help from the government in the shape of tax breaks or they warn they will go out of business. Many truckers are self-employed and say they cant compete with truckers elsewhere in Europe and want the same rules for everyone.
