EU leaders differ with Putin on Ukraine situation

The German Chancellor says the election process in Ukraine appears to have been unacceptable. Gerhard Schroeder contradicted Vladimir Putin with whom he has a close relationship by siding with international observers. He said the OSCE saw fraud and irregularities. He said the outside world and leaders in Ukraine have to find a peaceful way out of the crisis. But he did not say what the EU could do to help end the standoff.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief Javier Solana speaking in Brussels said relations between the EU and Ukraine were very important but that would depend on the quality of democracy in that country. He added he did not want to comment on the Russian leader’s view of the situation saying he would get a chance to meet Putin at a summit tomorrow. Meanwhile Mr Solana said he was very concerned the situation in Ukraine could erupt in violence.
