Ukraine’s neighbours watch and wait

Nowhere are events in Ukraine being watched more closely than in Georgia which has been marking the first anniversary of the so-called “rose revolution” which brought President Mikhail Saakashvili to power. That came after a similarly disputed election.

Saakashvili said now was the moment for Europe to stand beside the Ukrainian people to defend the democratic process there. Poland is Ukraine’s biggest EU neighbour and the country’s president, Aleksander Kwasniewski, spoke of his concerns. He expressed solidarity with the people of Ukraine and urged President Kuchma to mediate between the two sides.
