Ponchos on parade at APEC summit

world news

| |

It was not the usual attire for thrashing out trade deals but leaders of Asian and Pacific-rim nations appeared comfortable in traditional Chilean ponchos at a photo-call during their summit in Caracas.

Before they donned the ponchos the representatives of the 21 members of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum discussed a range of issues. APEC’s main aim is to advance trade among the bloc of nations. But the nuclear programmes of North Korea and Iran were high on the agenda as was international cooperation on terrorism. The US wants Asian allies, particularly China to do more to persaude North Korea to abandon nuclear research.
