A court in Afghanistan has sentenced a man to death for the murder of four journalists in 2001. Reza Khan was also found guilty of raping an Italian woman among the four journalists. He was also convicted on a separate charge of killing his wife.
Khan denied murdering three foreign reporters but said he had shot an Afghan photographer only because he was forced to. The 29 year old said had he not he would have been shot himself by other members of his gang leader. Australian Harry Burton, Afghan Azizullah Haidari, Spanish Julio Fuentes and Italian Maria Grazi Cutuli were seized by militants as they travelled to Kabul just days after the defeated Taliban withdrew from the city. Khan said after they were seized a Taliban commander ordered them shot. He is facing execution by hanging but is to appeal the verdict.
