The defence firm, BAe Systems has declined to comment on a German newspaper report which claimed Airbus parent company EADS was interested in buying part of the British company.Speculation that EADS was poised to take over the French electronics firm Thales led to talk of another set of deals to maintain the balance of national power within the industry. EADS was created four years ago through a merger of leading aerospace firms in France, Germany and Spain. The Thales deal would weaken German influence within EADS. The Financial Times Deutschland cited industry sources as saying that EADS is considering a deal with BAe as, perhaps, an alternative to the merger with Thales. The company holds 80 percent of commercial plane maker Airbus and is understood to be interested in the 20 percent that BAe owns in the company. It is believed EADS also wants to get its hands on BAe’s stake in the four-nation Eurofighter combat jet consortium.
