Parts of Europe have taken a battering in a weekend of stormy weather. There were landslides in northern Italy after heavy rains across the country. A man and woman in their seventies were found dead in the ruins of a house on the edge of Lake Como which had been destroyed in a rock fall. The regions of Umbria and Tuscany were also lashed by torrential rain and high winds that reach speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour.
Similar conditions also brought destruction to areas of southern France. The city of Marseille and the Bouches-du-Rhone region were among the worst affected places. It is not thought there were any casualties. But in Croatia around 30 people were injured as a result of the extreme weather. Winds there were said to have reached 200km per hour, causing chaos for land and sea transport.
