There has been a mass demonstration in the centre of Kiev staged by supporters of presidential hopeful Victor Yuschenko. Tens of thousands of Ukranians took part in the rally, which comes after the first round ballot and before the deciding vote on November 21st.
Yushenko is in a virtual draw with current prime minister, Victor Yanukovich, in the race to become the next head of state. The opposition leader warned authorities to play by the rules in the second round after widespread reports of voting irregularities Yushenko has campaigned on a pro-Western platform. “I know my country has unique resources with which to create high social standards like those in Lithuania, Estonia, Poland and the Czech Republic. For this we must do one thing, replace those in power,” he said. “By replacing those in power we will change our lives.” Yanukovich enjoys the backing of the outgoing president and support from Moscow. He wants to strengthen ties to Russia and stresses Ukraine’s steady economic growth. The prime minister has accused his opponent of mud-slinging in the campaign.
