Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is reported to be in intensive care after his health took a serious turn for the worse. A source told news agencies Arafat had been transferred to the ICU yesterday morning but said he was in a stable condition. The 75-year-old was flown from his Ramallah head quarters to France last week with severe stomach problems. Since then he’s undergone a barrage of tests at a military hospital near Paris. On Tuesday doctors said Arafat was responding to treatment and dispelled fears he was suffering from leukaemia. A fuller explanation of exactly what ails Arafat is expected some time today. It is understood he could remain in hospital for several weeks.
