California is Kerry country! At least that is the case in Italy, where a Tuscan village with an all-American name is staging its own US election. They have been piling into the polling booth to support the Massachusetts Senator. The indications are that he has secured over 60 percent of the vote. The organisers of the mock-up are taking it seriously. “We think the US president is a sort of world president so we can’t understand why only Americans get to vote,” said one of them. Exit polls show George W. Bush in third place behind independent challenger Ralph Nader. So why are these Californians so keen to give John Kerry their backing? One man said it was simple. He liked the challenger’s illustrious initials: JFK. The final results will be passed on to the US ambassador. But it looks like Kerry will be able to claim victory – at least on this side of the Atlantic.
